Multicultural Library: Conferences in Olsztyn, Opole and Gdańsk

We would like to invite you to three regional conferences entitled 'Multicultural Library':

The conferences will provide an opportunity to sum up the 'Library as a Meeting Place for Many Cultures' project. Librarians from Norway and Poland as well as representatives of non-governmental organizations operating in the field of multiculturalism will take part in the conferences. The meetings will be accompanied by an interactive group game which will allow attendants to better acquaint themselves with the multicultural library model created as part of the project. We will also present useful practices for multicultural activities, valuable book publications to read and educational materials.

The conference materials will include the 'Multicultural Library' publication which will help to establish and maintain the activities leading to the integration of a diverse local community.

People working in libraries, those employed in institutions and organizations cooperating with libraries as well as those who would wish to begin such cooperation are all invited to the conferences.

Registration for the conferences is only available online at the following addresses:

20 March 2014
Polish-Norwegian project competition

All the libraries participating in the project “Library as a Meeting Place For Many Cultures" are invited to take part in the competition for joint Polish-Norwegian actions!

The aim of the competition is to select five county partnerships, which - along with the Norwegian libraries (project partners) - will carry out small Polish-Norwegian projects. Each Polish-Norwegian project will involve carrying out one activity in Norway and one in Poland. The representatives of the competition winners will also participate in visits to Norwegian libraries and will host Norwegian librarians in Poland.

Norwegian partners of the project hope for the cooperation with Polish libraries:

“5000 of the inhabitants of our county are the immigrants from Poland. For the librarians in our county it would be useful to know more about libraries and society in Poland. What do the Poles expect from our libraries? What kind of services do they want, and what kind of services should be prioritized?"

“We learn from meeting people and libraries that have different experiences and other points of view than us. Sharing our experience will also make us reflect on how we work and what we do. We have so far in this project, experienced that questions from the Polish librarians have made us see ourselves and our multicultural projects in a new perspective.”

The deadline for submitting competition entries is 11 April 2014. The electronic applications should be e-mailed to: bogna.wlodarczyk@frsi.org.pl.

4 December 2013
Warsaw in a very multicultural climate

The first event for more than 60 participants of the project is over. On 28-29 November a meeting of representatives of voivodeship and county libraries (or performing their function), partners of the project from Norway as well as representatives of cultural minorities and non-governmental organizations was held in Warsaw. Two workshop days in a multicultural climate passed quickly in a creative and educational atmosphere and in good spirits what is confirmed by the results of the evaluation questionnaires (an average of 4.5 on a five-point scale).

The most interesting things always happen at the crossroads, also – at the crossroads of cultures. Our event was a unique opportunity to arrange the meeting of a Lemko woman with a Kashubian woman, Norwegian with Hungarian, Ukrainian, German and Roma languages, libraries with NGOs. This resulted in the first common plans and ideas for multicultural activities

Once again, we thank all the guests, participants, trainers for their participation in the meeting and for great involvement. The first training courses for county partnerships are to be launched in January. We hope that curiosity and appetite for multicultural activities will be even greater!

A preliminary model of the multicultural library

We are pleased to present a preliminary model of the multicultural library, which will be tested during the training and activities implemented within the framework of the project “Library as a meeting place for many cultures”. As a result, in the second half of 2014 a publication will be completed, presenting the final version of the model, containing also examples of good practices and scenarios of multicultural activities

The preliminary model was created by Dominika Cieślikowska and Maja Branka, and the frames of the model were consulted during the three-day meeting in June 2013 which was attended by librarians from Poland and Norway, representatives of NGOs acting in the area of multiculturalism and representatives of cultural minorities. The final version of the presented model is also a result of work of team members of the Information Society Development Foundation.

Project ‘Library as a Meeting Place for Many Cultures’ has been started

Multicultural and creative, in the atmosphere of dialogue and self-reflection, and  what's more, in eight languages: Norwegian Romany, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Russian, English, Kashubian and Polish. Such were the two events which launched the project 'Library as a Meeting Place for Many Cultures' that took place between 24th and 28th June this year: a study visit of a group of Norwegian librarians to Poland, and a Polish-Norwegian multicultural workshop.
