Library as a meeting place for many cultures

Every library is a meeting space for people of different ages, needs, interests, problems, and from various backgrounds. A library can also be a meeting place for many cultures: representatives of different national, ethnic or ethnographical groups, people using various languages or dialects, people of different faiths. A library should be an open, friendly and safe place for everyone, including immigrants and refugees.

The project’s objective is to develop a model of a library integrating a diverse local community and to equip librarians with the knowledge and skills necessary in planning and implementing multicultural activities, carried out together with the representatives of the minorities.

The project will be implemented in four multicultural regions (Lesser Poland, Opole, Pomeranian and Varmian-Masurian Voivodeships) and will cover 4 regional libraries, 9 county libraries and 36 municipal and communal libraries. Polish librarians will have an opportunity to draw on the experience of six Norwegian libraries, working with immigrants and cultural minorities:

The Multilingual Library in Oslo,
Buskerud County Library,
Hordaland County Library,
Oppland County Library,
Bergen Public Library,
Trondheim Public Library.

Within the project:

  • Representatives of regional and county libraries will participate in two two-day-long trainings, together with representatives of the minorities, members of non-governmental organizations and Norwegian librarians. Following the trainings regional libraries will update their development strategies to include support for county and communal libraries in multicultural activities.
  • Representatives of county and communal libraries (county partnerships) will participate in a series of four two-day-long trainings. As a result of the trainings every partnership will develop a three-year-long plan of multicultural activities. Representatives of local minorities will also take part in the trainings.
  • County partnerships will implement planned activities, engaging minorities and integrating local community – within the project every county and communal library will implement four activities included in the overall partnership’s plan. Both during the planning and implementation phase, the librarians will have an opportunity to consult with trainers-multiculturalism specialists.
  • Five small Polish-Norwegian projects will be implemented, within which Polish librarians selected in a contest will have an opportunity to visit Norwegian librarians and invite them to Polish libraries as well.
  • Three one-day-long conferences will take place in Gdańsk, Olsztyn and Opole. It will be a space to present activities implemented by the libraries participating in the project and to promote widely the model of a multicultural library.
 Project’s duration: May 2013-December 2014
